Deep massage

Deep tissue massage is a massage technique primarily used for treating musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries. It applies sustained pressure to the inner layers of muscles and connective tissues using slow, deep strokes. This helps break down scar tissue that forms after an injury and reduces muscle and tissue tension.

By increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation, it can also promote faster healing.

What are the benefits of deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage provides both physical and psychological advantages, addressing muscle pain and stiffness more directly than some other techniques while still offering mental relaxation.

According to a 2014 study involving 59 participants, deep tissue massage helped reduce chronic lower back pain.

Are there any side effects?

It's not uncommon to experience soreness for a few days following a deep tissue massage. A heating pad or a cold pack wrapped in a towel can help relieve the pain.

While massage therapy is generally safe, deep tissue massage uses very strong pressure and may not be safe for everyone.

Consult with your doctor before deep tissue massage if you have:

  • a history of blood clots or a bleeding disorder.
  • are taking blood thinners
  • have a bleeding disorder
  • have cancer or are undergoing cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation.
  • People with osteoporosis or cancer that has spread to the bones should avoid deep tissue massage, as the strong pressure applied can cause fractures.
  • are pregnant

If you have an open wound or any skin infection, you should postpone your massage to avoid developing a new infection or worsening an existing one.

Deep tissue massage is most suitable for those who engage in highly physical activities.
